Cigar Box Shrine - A Call to Artists

Last week I learned that our local smoke shop sells empty cigar boxes for $.50/each, so I stopped by to see if they had any and walked out with five boxes. For years I have been intrigued by the magic that can happen to a cigar box & just a few random art supplies, odds and ends. How fun it would be to try my hand at making a little of that magic myself?

The boxes have been sitting in a stack since I brought them home. I keep looking at them & sometimes grab one to open and close it a bunch of times before returning it to the pile ... where to begin, right? As the fates would have it ... I have a starting point and a purpose now.

I know that most everyone is knee deep, in holiday planning/creating/shopping, but if you have a moment, check out the link above (the image) and read all about the Dia de Los Muertos Art Exhibit & Sale (or click HERE). There is also the Cigar Box Shrine Gallery located HERE that has pages of inspiration ... AND the final deadline for recieving them is January 10, 2009.

Interesting. Good luck with this project. I have some plain wood boxes (beautifully made with dovetailed joints) that someone gave me long ago. They cry out for something to be done with them but I haven't figured out what yet. They are so nice I'm afraid to mess them up!

Maybe this project will give me some ideas...

AUGH!!!
How can I add this to my list?! But how can I not?!?

The shops I go to sell their boxes for between 2 and 4 dollars each. So, you're getting a deal, baby. Even the rose bowl swap meet doesn't sell them that cheaply!

Oh, I gotta think about this... I weep for cigar box shrines...

Sounds like a wonderful project...I also have cigar boxes that I bought with shrines in mind and didn't know where to start. I'm going to go take a look--thanks for posting this:)

The timing on this is pure serendipity! Yesterday I took a creating personal shrines workshop. Hmmmm I may have to jump in on this one!

Thanks for your comments today! You always make my day.

Later this week, I'll finish up my first shrine and I'll post some photos.

Oh what a memory your post has brought back. My grandmother had a cigar box in the bop drawer of her dresser and in it she had many "treasures"...I remember taking it out and very carefully, one by one, taking each thing out and looking at it...she had some brooches from her mother that, as I think about them now, totally gaudy, but incredibly beautiful to a 9-year-old...and yeah, to probably a 46 year old too!!
Looking forward to seeing what you do....cigar boxes are for treasures and memories...I'm sure you'll make those oh so very nice!!

Wow - I never thought of stopping by the local smoke shop (literally just down the street from us) and checking to see if they have cigar boxes - what a great idea!

I've always been intrigued with shrines and have often thought of trying my hand at it, but I just never get around to it. I can't wait to see what you make with yours!

I also love using cigar boxes for things, they have a magical unique quality to them. I pay two dollars each! You got a bargain. I have a little stash of them and I like the shrine idea.

I've always been fascinated by cigar boxes since I was a little girl and received one from my Great Grandfather to keep my coloured pencils in. It felt very grown up and like something a real artist would store coloured pencils in - or at least that was my 8 year old logic. :) What a wonderful project idea!
